Thin-film solar cell

Abstract:

Thin-film crystalline high-efficiency and low-cost solar cells are expected to play a significant role for a greener energy source. The new technology development allow the active semiconductor layer can be 10 C 100 times thinner than the conventional solar cells by advanced light trapping. Even more importantly, an improvement in efficiency and open circuit voltage (Voc) in thin-film solar cells can be achieved due to carrier confinement.

In the first part of this talk, I will first introduce the solar cell concept and the industry. Then, the talk will focus on optical engineering and absorption improvement in nano-structured Si and GaAs thin-film solar cells. Next, I will present the Voc and efficiency enhancement in thin-film Si solar cells in both theoretical simulation and experimental demonstration. This technology also reduces the requirement of material quality and lower the total cost.
