MEMS Sensor Market Outlook at Consumer Electronic Applications

Abstract:

MEMS (Micro-electro-mechanical-systems) have been the enabling technologies for the innovative consumer electronics human-machine interface (HMI) devices. Like the accelerometer in Wii controller; gyroscope in the digital camera hand-shake correction; Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) in the smartphones, and many other examples. MEMS is finally reaching the high volume mass production with the help of consumer electronics adoption. Further more, the MEMS sensors are also being designed into health care and medical devices that enhance the quality of the life for aging populations and improve the cost and speed at the point of care.

In this seminar, the speaker will analyze the current MEMS market trends, survey the big players and start-ups in the fields and point out new opportunities that drive the next wave of smart sensor businesses.

Biography:

Tom is President of CTI Consulting, a marketing firm specialized in MEMS and sensor technologies. CTI is the North America representative of APM, a leading MEMS foundry based in Hsinchu Taiwan and has successfully developed numerous business cases in the MEMS market. In the past 5 years, Tom also has organized several MEMS conferences and forums both in Taiwan and Silicon Valley, as well as being a member of organizing committee for the largest MEMS conference in the world--Transducer, 09 and 11. Tom was a panelist at the MEMS symposium of SensorExpo, 09 in Chicago.

Tom is a veteran in disk drive industry. Tom was Vice President, Engineering of Dastek, a thin-film head start-up that was successfully acquired in 1992. From 1997 to 2002, Tom was also a Senior Director at Read-Rite (now Western Digital) in charge of Wafer Fab Engineering. On his watch, the fab completed a major wafer size transition and development of several generations of new GMR head products. Toms system development experiences include a Senior Engineering Manager at Samsung Information Technology and another start-up founded by Finis Conner--StorCard.

Tom holds MS, ChE from UC Davis and BS from National Tsing-Hua University of Taiwan. Tom is a Stanford Business School Graduate through Stanford Executive Program. In community service, Tom is the current vice president of Taiwanese American Industrial Technology Association, a past president of North America Taiwanese American engineers Association and a past president of CAISS.
