Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser: technology and applications

Abstract:

Since its emerging in 1980's, Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) has experienced rapid development and grown into a mature product in many applications due to its advantages such as low cost, easy coupling to fiber and scalability into 2D arrays etc. This presentation will provide an introduction to VCSEL technologies and discuss its various applications in fiber optical communication, optical sensing, high-power source for pumping and imaging etc.

 

Bio: 

 

Zhilong Rao received his M.S. in electrical engineering and Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University where he developed ultrahigh-intensitynano-apertured semiconductor lasers for near field applications. Currently, Dr. Rao is Product Engineering Manager at JDSU, where he works on semiconductor lasers (VCSELs, tunable DFB laser etc), detectors and photonic integrated chip products used in optical communication and other optical applications.
