Overview of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers

Abstract
It has been over ten years since the first commercial VCSELs appeared on the market. During this period, the VCSEL has established itself as a reliable, small, and cost effective alternative to edge emitting lasers in many areas of application. Today we see steady growth in the demand for VCSELs both in their initial datacom market as well as in new markets that they have managed to penetrate, such as image projection and optical mouse. VCSEL structure and technology have diversified in response to the applications, and currently include short wavelength, long wavelength, single mode, external cavity, and high power types. This presentation will give an overview of VCSEL applications and technologies, and is intended for a technical but not specialized audience.
