The Development of the Non-Physical Contact Optical Fiber Connector

Abstract:

In this talk the development of the world's first non-contact (NC) fiber connector is reported. Lightreading calls it "the first major advance for connectors in 30 years". Because there is no physical contact between fibers in the new NC connector, it practically lasts forever and is very insensitive to contamination. It offers the advantages of very low insertion loss, near zero insertion loss repeatability, extremely high return loss, high power handling, guaranteed random mating performance. Manufacturing cost is comparable to existing connectors.

Biography:

Dr. Benjamin Jian is the founder and president of Arrayed Fiberoptics Corporation in Sunnyvale. He obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University. Before the invention of the NC connector, Arrayed Fiberoptics specializes in 2D fiber arrays and 2D collimator arrays using DRIE etched silicon substrates and holds the US patent on this technology.
