Laser Technology and Nobel Physics Awards

Abstract:

Since the invention of Laser for over 50 years ago the laser technology has continued to being developed and its applications areas have greatlywiden. This talk will briefly review certain key laser technology and its impact on seven Nobel Physics Awards since the laser invention up to recent years. A couple of recent new laser technology developments will be briefly highlighted if time allows.

Bio:

Professor Wang received Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University 1971. He has an extensive professional career both in the academic and industrial research institutions from 1965~1995. He was a faculty member at NationalChiao Tung University (NCTU), a postdoctoral Research Associate with Professor A. E. Siegman at Stanford University, a Senior Research Scientist at Xerox Corporation, and a Consulting Scientist at Lockheed-Martin Palo Alto Research Laboratories. Since 1995 he rejoined NCTU as a Visiting Professor then faculty member and currently is an Honorary Professor Emeritus at the Department of Photonics and Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering where he leads a research team conducting research on blue vertical cavity surface emitting lasers, blue and UV light emitting devices, and nano-photonic devices.

Professor Wang is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and a Life member of IEEE. He has served as a program committee member of numerous photonics related international conferences, and Chair of 2010 Micro Optics conference. He also served as Guest Editor of IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics on Semiconductor Lasers. He has co-authored three books and published over 250 technical papers and has been awarded over twenty laser related patents including the white light laser.
