Single Cell Analysis Using Flow Cytometer: Technologies and Applications

Abstract:

Flow cytometer based single cell analysis is one of major success to use Laser and fluorescence dye labeling for cell biology and medical clinic applications. It combines the Laser and optoelectronics technology with fluorescence labeled anti-bodies for cell marker identification and cell sorting. Single cell based analysis and sorting allows to identifying cells in rare event rather than assembly average. This talk will give an overview the history of flow cytometer technology development and applications. It also will discuss the recent development in the areas of cytometer technologies and biological and medical applications, and the opportunities and challenges of cell analysis using cytometry in general.

Biography:

Dr. Ming Yan is a principal systems engineer at the BD Biosciences in San Jose. In BD, he has worked in the areas of cytometer instrumentation and architecture development, systems performance characterization and standardization. He also worked in the area of optical and laser technologies during his career including optical waveguide for communication, Laser spectroscopy and microscope for organic and biological materials. He has published over 50 papers and 6 patents in those areas. He received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the City University of New York, and his B.S. in physics from Fudan University, China. Prior to joining BD Biosciences, he also held engineering and managing position at Lightwave Micro and Neophotonics Corp, and staff positions at Lawrence Livermore National lab and AT&T Bell Laboratories.
