High Power White LEDs for Illumination: Technologies and Applications
 

Abstract:

With the rapid progress made in high power white LED development in the areas of performance improvement and cost reduction, the adoption of the LEDs for illumination has accelerated over last few years. The replacement of low efficiency traditional light sources such as regular incandescent light bulbs and halogen lamps with high efficiency LED based lamps will help to save energy and reduce carbon emission, thus contribute to the fight of global warming.
In this talk, Dr. Sun will present a few key technologies of making high power White LEDs, the state of the art performances and their applications in illumination. Dr. Sun will discuss the challenges and opportunities of the white LEDs for solid state lighting. He will also show some white LED products and LED based lamps developed by Philips Lumileds and Philips Lighting.


Biography:

Decai Sun received his Ph.D in Engineering Physics and Material Sciences from University of Virginia in 1994. After graduation, he worked at Xerox PARC on semiconductor lasers and MEMS development as a member of the technical staff until 2000. He then joined a startup called Bandwidth9 to develop tunable long wavelength VCSELs for telecommunications. In 2003, he joined Philips Lumileds to develop high power LEDs for illumination. He is currently a senior manager and principle investigator for a few high power white LED programs funded by United States Department of Energy (DOE). He holds over 50 patents in semiconductor lasers, MEMS and power LEDs and has published about 30 journal papers and a book chapter.
