Development of Optical Networks and CFP Transceivers

Abstract:

Within the past 20 years the techniques of passive optical networks (PON), local-area networks (LANs) and optical transceivers have been developed rapidly. The transmittance distance has been increased from several hundred meters to more than one hundred kilometers and the data rate has doubled every two years. This presentation explains the developments of optical carriers, introduces the techniques of CFP transceivers, and compares the advantage and disadvantage among these approaches. This presentation also estimates the life time of the techniques.

 

 

Bio: 

 

  Dr. Yuanji Tang got his BS degree at Nanjing University, Physics Department and PhD degree at University of Tennessee in Laser Physics and Laser Applications.

  Since 1998, Dr. Tang worked in SBIR companies with various optical-electrical and optical projects, such as optical phase/amplitude modulators, solid state lasers, switchable gratings, optical coherent tomography, etc. He has wide experiences in optical crystals, OE crystals, and birefringent crystals as well as liquid crystals.  He has very solid knowledge in light wave propagations in free space and optical crystals, imaging system, optical interference, diffraction, polarization.   

  In recent five years, Dr. Tang work with projects of wavelength selective switches, CFP transceivers, and coherent detectors in telecommunication companies of OPLINK and AFOP.
