LED Packaging technology for LCD Backlight Application

Abstract:

This presentation reviews current status on LED packaging technology used in LCD backlight module (BLM) design. Great efforts have been invested into this application for last 3-4 years. Our study has proven the feasibility of using an array of LEDs for the application of liquid crystal display (LCD) backlight. There are several technologies competing in this market with the following key driving factors: Cost of LEDs, Efficiency of the LED BLM designs, and Performance. Although many promising results were achieved with standard off-the-shelf LEDs, significant improvements in surface radiance uniformity and efficiency could be obtained with different light guide designs and packaging technologies. With the continuing cost reduction on CCFL technology, Can LED technology make a wave in this challenge? We will discuss the performance of display BLM using LED approaches in terms of cost, performance, and scalability in the Monitor and LCD-TV applications.
