 Overview on wavelength selective switch (WSS) and its applications: the past, present and future

Abstract: 

Wavelength selective switch (WSS) is the key component to construct the reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) in long-haul and metro networks. This presentation will review the evolution of WSS technologies along with the ROADM architectures, including several hot topics such as flexible bandwidth,  and colorless/directionless/contentionless (CDC) add/drops. Looking into the future, applications beyond telecom will be discussed as well.

 
Speaker Bio: 

Dr. Zhong ( R  ɽ  ʿ) is the Director of Technology and Product Development in CoAdna Photonics, responsible for defining and driving the strategic technology roadmap on WSS/ROADM related products/solutions for optical networking. Before he joined CoAdna, he was a principal engineer in CIENA Corporation since 2001, where he was engaged into ROADM design for long-haul and metro networks as well as 40G/100G transceiver development. Before CIENA, he worked as senior optical engineer in Sycamore Networks from 1999 to 2001.  Dr. Zhong received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 1992 and 2001, respectively. He is a Senior Member of IEEE Photonics Society and Communications Society. He served as the president of Photonics Society of Chinese-American (PSC) for year 2007~2008. He has published tens of papers on technical journals and conferences and holds 10+ awarded U.S. patents.
