Optics Technology and Challenge in Augmented Reality

Abstract:

Augmented reality (AR) is a promising next generation personal computing platform to provide people more vivid interactive experiences, more immersive feelings and more seamless switches between reality and perception. High-tech companies such as Google, Apple and Facebook are all investing in AR, hoping to become the big player in the competition. Though the realization of AR requires breakthroughs from all technical sides, optics seems to be the core technology and main barrier. In this talk, I will introduce the challenges in AR optics and efforts made from both industry and academia to realize AR as the next big thing in consumer electronics.

Bio:

Dr. Wen Xiong is an optical scientist at Facebook Reality Labs. She earned her Ph.D. degree in Applied Physics, focusing on diffractive optics, at Yale University. In the same year, she joined Facebook in 2019 working on the technology development of augmented reality display. Before coming to the U.S. for her Ph.D. study, she graduated from Optical Engineering department at Zhejiang University. She co-authored 13 publications including Nature and APS journals in the field of optical fibers, laser speckles, ultra-fast optics, and light-matter interactions.
