GHz burst mode ultrashort pulse fiber lasers for material processing

Abstract:

The concept of GHz burst mode ultrashort laser pulse was introduced in the ultrafast laser development, especially in fiber-based systems. Some fundamental aspects of this new type of lasers are presented, including the motivation of their development, the features of the pulse mode, the structure of the laser system, performance, and some preliminary results of material processing applications. The published R&D results of the applications as well as our own experiments in laser marking and other micro-machining show that the laser of the new pulse mode is effective in material processing, at least equivalent to the traditional single pulse ultrafast lasers. This is of particular significance in that it opens a way to achieve high power and large pulse energy picosecond and femtosecond lasers of lower cost and higher reliability using regular fibers. The progress in this specific field provides a lot of opportunities in new laser development and industrial applications and applications in other areas. Some examples of the laser design and of material processing are discussed.

Bio:

Baocheng Yang was awarded his PhD degree in optics by East China Normal University in 1991.

He spent ten years in Physics department of East China Normal University as an associate professor. During the period, his research projects included solid state laser development and modeling and simulation of infrared images of objects on the sea.

He came to USA in 2001. After spending a few years in communication industry Baocheng Yang entered laser industry in 2005, and has worked in several laser companies for nearly 20 years. These include optical engineer in Apollo Instruments (Irvin, CA) in period from 2005 to 2007, developing fiber coupled high power diode laser modules, optical engineer in Infralase (Albuquque, NM) from 2007 to 2008, senior optical engineer in Calmar Laser (Sunnyvale, CA) from 2009 to 2014, Coherent (Santa Clara, CA) from 2014 to 2017 (staff manufacturing engineer) and from 2021 to now (senior staff development engineer), and principal R&D engineer in Boston Scientific (San Jose, CA) from 2017 to 2021. The technologies and products, the development of which Baocheng Yang has been involved, cover the fields of semiconductor lasers, solid state lasers and fiber lasers, and the temporal mode of the lasers spans from continuous wave mode, long pulse mode, short pulse mode to ultrashort pulse mode. During the long period in the laser industry, he participated in quite a few R&D projects of new technologies and products, and also worked in the production line as manufacturing engineer, and thus acquired quite a lot of experience and expertise in laser technology and laser products, especially in ultrafast fiber lasers and 2 μm medical laser systems.
