Ink-jet Printing Technologies in Industrial Applications

Abstract:

Currently, drop-on-demand ink-jet printing is the mainstream of ink jet technology, which is an ink or liquid delivery system. The advantage of ink-jet technology is that it is a real non-contact printing.  The application of ink-jet technology in printer has created a more than $30 billions industry and is still growing. Applications other than printer are emerging such as microarray for genes and proteins in biotechnology and potential usage in

liquid crystal device (LCD) etc.

In this talk, I will focus in the following three areas:

I. Ink-jet technologies

The basic principle and disciplines of thermal ink-jet printing technology and the common issues of inks will be

briefly discussed.

II. Nano-partcle in ink and its requirements

Miniaturization of colorants to nano size for ink jet inks and current status of “nano particle” in ink-jet printing applications will be presented .Traditional methods and their issues will also be discussed.

III. Applications

Current ink jet printing is mainly used in home and office applications. Nano particle inkjet inks can open up a much wider application area.  One of the potential applications is in the color filters for LCD. Its feasibility has been demonstrated but has not yet been commercialized due to the lack of colorants with high color purity, archival property and reproducibility etc. Other graphic and photo applications and potential new area  applications will be discussed.

Speaker Bio:

Bob Lin, Ph.D.(林安正博士) has been the president of IJP Solutions since its inception in 2002. He was a member of the Technical Staff and Project Leader in HP-Labs of

Hewlett-Packard (HP) Company. While at HP, Bob was in charge of developing ink-jet inks and other areas related to the printing technology.  Before joining HP, Bob was a

Senior Engineering Manager at Exxon/Dataproducts before it was acquired by Hitachi.  Before Exxon, he had been a Senior Chemist and project leader at Burroughs

(Now Unisys).

Bob has authored numerous technical papers and is the holder of 33 US patents (more than 100 international).  Bob was an invited speaker in numerous conferences/meetings such as Technical Advisory Committee (TAC)-Industrial Technology Research Institute, DIPC (Digital Image Printing Conference), Digital Image Printing Technologies in Multimedia Symposium, Bis Strategic Decision of Ink Jet Printing Technologies Conference etc.  He was a section chairman and/or co-chairman of numerous technical conferences such as the Ink Jet Section Chairman at International Imaging Congress of IS&T, the “Telecommunication and Networking in Asia” Conference etc.  He also served as the president and chairman of the Chinese American Photonics Society in the United States. He earned his B.S. degree in chemistry from National Taiwan Normal University, and his Ph.D. degree in physical organic chemistry from Illinois Institute of Technology.  He continued his research as a post-doctoral fellow/instructor at University of Rochester.
