NEW SPACE - COMMERCIAL SATELLITE COMMUNICATION

 

Abstract:

 

Satellite Communication market is poised to take off and represents a major new opportunity for Optical Communications, primarily for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) connections both between satellites. The driving forces underneath the booming growth of satcom are the decreased hardware and launch cost, the huge investments from the private sector, and the need to cover underserved areas today. Leveraging fiber communication technology for space applications require addressing key challenges to survive launch and to operate in the space radiation environment. On top of the reliability issues, specific performances in terms of optical power and, dimensions and power dissipation will be discussed. Long and extensive experience together with vertical integration from materials to subsystems, can make the difference in providing the optimal solution for custom applications to pioneer the new space frontier

 

Bio:

 

Dr. Jack Jian Xu is VP Marketing, Telecom Vertical in Coherent Corp.. He has been in Telecom industry for 25+ years starting at Nortel and in various companies which have become part of the rich heritage of Coherent. He was a pioneer in the development of the first liquid crystal-based Dynamic Gain Equalizer and Wavelength Blocker in 2000 at LambdaFlex (acquired by Avanex/Coherent), then VP of global sales and marketing for CoAdna/Coherent, a major supplier of  Wavelength Selective Switch for the first ROADM (Reconfigurable Optical Add and Drop Multiplexer) deployment at Verizon’s metro and long-haul networks. He was the first product line manager for micro ITLA (Integrated Tunable Laser Assembly) for 100G+ coherent application and closed many strategic design-wins for Emcore/Intel. Jack graduated from The University of Science and Technology China and holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.
